When you think of Algonquin Provincial Park, you likely think of its wildlife, canoe culture, lake cabins and amazing cuisine.
A magnificent natural paradise of lush maple and fir woodlands, spring wildflower meadows and sparkling lakes, you can go walking, fishing and canoeing for hours without seeing a soul.
This is quite surprising, really, since it's only a 2.5 hour drive from Toronto.
Algonquin was the first of Ontario’s national parks, founded in 1893 as almost eight thousand square kilometers. It's sprawling wilderness offers many chances to see moose, deer, beaver and black bears, from afar or up close in their natural habitat. The park authorities have been at the forefront of wolf research since the 1950s and on Thursdays in August they arrange communal 'wolf howls.' This spine tingling interaction with nature results in ready responses from wolves in the area.
